Sanwo-Olu Issues Directives To Immigration On COVID-19 Third Wave

The Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to take drastic steps to control the spread of the deadly third wave of COVID-19.

The governor said NIS has a legal obligation to prevent the virus from spreading wider, and that they should examine people entering the country through land, sea, and air borders.

According to the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, the passengers “came into the country via Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos but could not be reached for COVID-19 status monitoring by EKOTELEMED because they supplied wrong contact details.

“As the gatekeeper, Sanwo-Olu charged NIS to work with frontline responders stationed at ports of entry across border posts to ensure in-bound travellers adhere to laid down COVID-19 protocols.”

Meanwhile, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, recently disclosed the isolation centres in the state are getting occupied again.

Sanwo- Olu explained that in just two weeks, the population of the isolation centres increased by 5% and people should show some concern for the rising figures.

Sanwo-Olu said: From the beginning of July, we started to experience a steep increase in the number of daily confirmed cases, with the test positivity rate going from 1.1% at the end of June 2021 to its current rate of 6.6% as at 8th of July 2021.

“The rapid increase within a week gives great cause for concern. Also, within the last two weeks, the occupancy rate at our two isolation centres increased from an average of one per cent to sic per cent,”
