Professional Nurse at Stellenbosch University

Duties/Pligte

  • Helping to manage the implementation of the trials;
  • Assisting with the clinical evaluation of participants (infants and their mothers, and children);
  • Taking blood samples (including from infants and children), placing intravenous canulas and performing clinical assessments (e.g. weighing, measuring, and checking vital signs);
  • Completing data collection forms, including questionnaires;
  • Recording essential data on the relevant forms meticulously and on time;
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality;
  • Maintaining clear communication channels with the study team and routine clinic staff;
  • Performing TB examinations, e.g. by obtaining sputum samples and gastric aspirates;
  • Performing ECGs on babies and young children;
  • Vaccinating babies if required.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • A nursing qualification and registration with the South African Nursing Council;
  • At least two years’ clinical paediatric or equivalent research experience, including performing phlebotomies;
  • Fluency in writing, reading and speaking English;
  • The ability to work with young children and babies;
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to function in a multidisciplinary team;
  • A punctual, well organised and responsible work ethic;
  • Basic computer literacy;
  • The willingness to work in townships should the project require it;
  • The willingness to work flexible work hours should the project require it;
  • A valid driver’s licence.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • GCP training and certification;
  • Proficiency in isiXhosa or Afrikaans (or both).
