SENIOR RESEARCHER (SENIOR LECTURER): CENTRE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES OF AFRICAN SOCIETY (CASAS)

The Centre for Advanced Studies of African Society (CASAS) at the University of the Western Cape has a vacancy for a suitably qualified candidate for the post of SENIOR RESEARCHER (Senior Lecturer equivalent). CASAS was established in 1997 as a research intensive and cross-disciplinary unit, to leverage the best available African expertise and scholarship to support a network of Africans addressing questions of interest to Africa. Now located in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the work of CASAS has been informed by an acute sense of history, including colonial interest in and influence on the language landscape in Africa. CASAS’ core activities have included the harmonization of African language orthographies across linguistic and national boundaries; promotion of African languages in basic and higher education; production and dissemination of literacy textbooks, textbooks for citizenship education, materials of public interest such as on technology, health, agriculture and social issues, and research on African linguistics, language policies and development. CASAS also publishes edited books and monographs covering areas of linguistics; primers and readers for use in schools; glossaries, bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, grammars and on descriptive analysis of African languages.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- have experience of teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate level;
- have a track record of successful postgraduate supervision;
- conduct cutting-edge research in African languages with a special focus on formal/theoretical, descriptive, typological aspects and their application in social, educational and development dimensions.
- source external research funding from national and international agencies and government bodies.
- contribute to seeking and maintaining relationships with ministries of education and curriculum development centres and language policy makers and stakeholders across the continent.
- contribute to the planning, organization and delivery of workshops and seminars series on African languages, society and education in South Africa and across the continent;
- establish and maintain community outreach activities as well as Faculty and University-wide initiatives in support of the University’s Institutional Operating Plan and internationalisation endeavours.

- a PhD in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics or related field;
- understanding of formal/theoretical and/or typological aspects of African languages;
- a good understanding of the political, social and educational issues as well as language and development issues facing the African society;
- Knowledge and proficiency in at least two African languages;
- a publication track record comprising books on reputable presses and/or accredited/refereed journals; commensurate with the position of a Senior Lecturer/Senior Researcher in a research-led institution.
