Man Beaten at Kempinski Hotel for Trying to Pay for Food with His National Health Insurance Card

A 42-year old man has received the beatings of his life after failing to pay for the expensive food he ordered at the plush Kempinski Hotel in Accra.

The man, identified as Osman Yamusah, ordered fufu (GHC 110), chicken breast (GHC 195), and Coca-Cola (GHC 30) when after eating presented his National Health Insurance card as his payment option.

Mr. Osman Yamusah had visited the Ridge Hospital for treatment when the Dr. who attended to him asked that he goes to the lab for a test before he would be able to prescribe medicine for me. He, therefore, asked Osman to go and find some heavy food to eat at the canteen before going to the lab.

Osman, upon hearing the canteen mistook it for Kempinski. He quickly rushed to the restaurant section of the 5-star hotel and ordered fufu, chicken breast, and topped it up with a chilled Coca-Cola.

According to an eye-witness, when Osman finished eating the food which cost a total of GHS 335, he called the waiter and handed him GHC 2 as a tip.

When asked to pay for the food, Osman asked the waiter to check their system as his name was there.

Per the eye-witness’ account, the waiter pointed it out to Osman that he had not pre-booked prior to his coming so his name was not in the system. It was then that, according to the eye-witness, Osman brought out his National Health Insurance card, including his hospital referral form, and handed it over to the waiter.

When asked what the hotel should do with the NHIS card, Osman said he was covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme to eat there as part of his visit to the hospital.

“It was at that moment the waiter called the security to deal with him. The security man took him to his post and gave him some lashes,” the eye-witness narrated.

Furious Osman left the hotel and promised to take legal action against the hotel for not allowing him to use his health insurance card to eat there.
